That is similar to what I was attempting to get across. In the winter here, I have almost no ambient lighting so my photo period in much longer. At the moment I receive about 5 hours of sun light (direct + ambient) so my photo period for direct lighting is shortened. I also extend the photo period by an hour or 2 during cloudy days.

With a person's individual tank, I think that you want to keep a reasonably consistent level of lighting day to day throughout the year. Especially with Puffers where seasonal changes are minimal. Tropical climates have a very consistent dawn and dusk schedule where as, the further north and south you go it starts to vary the further you go from the equator.
