The Puffer Forum

I have what I consider to be a pair of fairly docile Figure 8's, and I saw the smaller, more docile one try to taste a male Knight Goby (who is at least 50% bigger than the puffer and quite territorial himself) this afternoon, LOL. It was quite amusing.
I wouldn't say I'm worried about the Goby, but just thought I'd comment on the fact that size truly doesn't matter with puffers, apparently.
I'm hoping mine are docile enough to accept a pair of chromides this summer.

Since this thread was re-opened some comments on the eels, BB and puffers.

- The tire track eel M. favus will reach about 70-80 cm and be able to swallow whole BB gobies. Spiny eels are commonly labelled wrong in the stores, though.

- The BW or FW moray eel G. tile (as well as G. polyuranodon) do best in marine tanks, reach 60 cm and, ahen grown, will eat or wound any fish below 30 cm.

- There is a number of different BB goby species. Some reach only about 1.5 cm maximum lenght, some attain up to 4 cm. Quite a difference.

- Small Spiny eels such as M. pancalus are fine with bumblebee gobies, but some puffer individuals nip their fins.

I was kinda thinking he was referring to the dragon goby, which could look like an "eel".

...oh yeah, aside the tire track and the "not further specified eel" another eel like fish discussed in this thread. There is a very good article about those dragon gobies on WWM .

Just to add to this post and I know its old... but I kept a tire track eel for 7 years and it was my first real pet responsibility.

As long as the fish are about the same size as the eel you should be fine with it. I kept mine with an African brown knife and a yellow, blue, and moonlight gourami. Although the eel needs a 100 gallon tank eventually to be happy. My eel orginially ate live fish then after 3 years started refusing live and I moved him to frozen thawed bloodworms and brine shrimp. They are picky eaters. But make WONDERFUL pets. I hope to eventually get another some day. I would say no to adding a tire track eel with a puffer for the pure fact that the eel will get enormous and require a very large tank and will easily be the dominant in there.

Oh and they do have teeth haha....... I learned this when I put my finger too close to the top of the water and the eel thought it was food and bit it..... they have teeth in their throat. It's wild but they do have teeth.

One thing I would say is that the eels burrow into the gavel and often leave head or tail sticking out of the gravel. IMO many puffers would see this as a source of food or at least see if its edible!!
