Since Ive never had a sump system I got a quick question? The square pre-filter above the trickle box, One side is blue and one side is white. Which side faces up for best prefiltration?

after several years, running low on filter floss (bought a big bag last purchase)
what's the latest on a safe floss to use, no anti-fungals, no fire retardants, no nothing, just floss?
brand name?
store to buy it at?
