The Puffer Forum

T. miurus is a lovely puffer! Too big for my little tank though. I was happy keeping Mistah Puff in the smaller tank because he was at his maximum of 3 inches and wasn't active enough to require more space. I could keep on top of the water quality by performing large regular water changes so I was happy with the level of maintenance required to keep him healthy in a smaller tank. A six inch puffer is too big though I'm afraid . I'll stick with my plan for some 'normal' tropicals! It's been a while since I've kept anything other than goldfish and Mistah Puff, so it'll make a change!

Mebe look into a pair of kribs, they have nice color, easy to breed, and have intresting habits.

Kribs are nice, but I prefer the way rams look. Plus kribs are that much more aggressive.
Haha... this is going to sound so anti-puffer! I was thinking of getting some little shrimp as well as a pair of rams to put in the tank as an algae/detritis crew. Mistah Puff would be turning in his grave at the thought of shrimp living in his house!

Mebe look into cherry shrimp or bamboo shrimp. They accent tanks nicely!

Yeah I had been thinking of some cherry shrimp or some fire shrimp... nice n red! I'm hearing mixed reports about keeping shrimp with rams though. The species of ram I want to get is Microgeophagus ramirezi. Someone told me on another forum that he had some cherry shrimp and amano shrimp that were eaten by his bolivian rams (Microgeophagus altispinosus), but I'm pretty sure that the bolivians are more aggressive than ramirezi? *doesn't know what to do now*

I would look into a dwarf species of ram, I personally have only encountered blue dwarfs (sorry I don't know their scientific name.) The species does tend to hide out in drift wood or clusters of plants, but it is very docile.

Yeah I think that Microgeophagus ramirezi may be the blue dwarf but I'm not sure? I'm crap with common names, because a lot of the time several fish will have the same common name! At any rate, I'm now steering away from the idea of rams since they are pretty unpredictable with stuff like shrimp and they might mess up my nice Lilaeopsis carpet! lol... I have plenty of other options though, so I'll keep looking until I find the perfect match for Mistah Puff's tank. Maybe dwarf gourami or something like that!

Gawd... my tank's way too itty bitty for a ray! Even a so-called 'teacup' ray.
It's only 24x8x8, so about 6.6 US gallons. I have good over-filtration (53gph so it's filtered 8 times per hour) and I'm on top of my water changes so I can be *slightly* lenient with stocking densities, but only slightly. After all a stocking 'guide' is just that.
I'd love to be in a position to keep a ray though... they are such friendly fish!

Sorry to hijack but just wanted to warn people on 'teacup rays.' Teacups should not be in circulation, they are just baby rays and usually do not do well in peoples tanks other then breeders. They usually are found in the stingray deathcurl the next morning.

Indeed... hence 'so-called'. There are some smaller species of ray, but none of them are teacup sized by any means. Hijacking was warranted there I think!

Oh and I do have a 29 US gallon tank, but that's where my goldfish live ^_^

Mebe its time for another tank!
