Ah, but they don't require much room Don! That's the beauty of it. They do have a special something to them I have to admit, and I suppose that's why I have 2 of them!

aww im sorry mrhumphries... i know your pain lol my boyfriend put me on a fishtank diet too im only allowed 3... i have DPs and a fahaka too! we're fish tank twins! haha... the other tank has a red devil whom im planning on rehoming for more puffs lol... he says i need to go to puffers annonamous

LOL! to funny, its the noise my wife hates, all the pump and water noise drive's her nuts, my daughter's 56 Gal Oscar tank is as loud as all of my tank put together, its running 2 penguin 200's there super loud. Samson's new tank will be running a Canister filter

I can't stand the water plashing noise at all it drives me crazy so all tanks are filled to the rim lol
and they usually have to be filled daily b/c water evaporates very quickly

The filters themselves don't really bother me
I CAN stand a constant noise that never changes( like the filters) but not something that sounds different like water splashing.

I'm soooo glad my husband doesn't have any dislikes about the noise of the tanks. No matter which room you go in downstairs, you will hear water splashing as I've got tanks in every room. I actually like it and it would probably bother me if all the "noise" stopped. I find it relaxing, but that's just me.

Ok so if I buy live foods just soak their flakes in the jungle tabs for a few days feed before they should be parasite free?

That is NOT a reliable method of eliminating parasites. Yes, 4-6 treatments will almost certainly wipe out existing parasites, but what if it's an egg laying type of worm? Plenty of unharmed eggs will still be in the feeders. If you insist upon using feeder fish, you really must set up a breeding tank, treat your initial breeding stock 4-6 times, then another 4-6 times in a few weeks, to eliminate newborns from hatching eggs in the breeders. After this, the parent fish and all spawn from the same tank(so long a NOTHING new is added!) will be safe, parasite and disease free feeders. This is the ONLY safe method of using feeders... most oscars and the majority of other cichilds ultimately die of complications due to their owners insistence on feeding them nutritionally deficient and otherwise toxic feeder fish because "they're supposed to eat other fish." Frankly we can do better for them in captivity than they endured in the wild, and living long enough to produce spawn before dying(the "gold standard" of continued Darwinian existence) is simply NOT a sufficient standard for keeping our own fish. They have unlimited foods, a cultured environment, and NO chance of predation. We should be expecting our fish to do more and better than their wild counterparts.

So would you suggest treating puffers with IPs twice like that as well?

I always have. Sometimes I do 3 rounds actually.

Thanks, that's what I'll be doing then. The little puffer looks like he's getting a bit thinner a bit faster than before.

Problem is, parasites are animals reproduce so you have to keep killing them off after their eggs hatch. Kind of like killing fleas.

So what should we actually be doing then? Regularly treating for the rest of their life? Treating food and water?

Just keep an eye out for symptoms & forgo live foods whenever possible or QT for at least a month before feeding.
