I think if you feed them a really varied diet with lots of gut-loaded food, then no, they don't need it, but it's hard to get that much variety all the time. I know I sure don't.

Kaleeko seems to eat almost anything, he will eat Frozen Krill, King Worms, Snails, Tiger Shrimp.. is there anything else a healthy puffer needs?

maybe a little late but we use garlic as a feeding stimulus .. they are attracted to the unusual scent .. BUT this is for lake fishing .. not for tank situations ... you'd have to use minute amounts to stimulate the feeding at best.
