It was pretty cold. The water around here is absolutely nasty, chock-full of chemicals.

Edit - It can also be seasonal. They put more chlorine/chloramines in the system in the spring. I remember Agnate saying that he double-doses dechlorinator in the spring.

Thanks for the help. A new filter would be nice and I will add it to my future list along with a heater because both are getting old.

I thought I would give an update in case anybody else might run into this situation. I took my old fitter and remove the plastic insert and then rinse the ploy part out, put in a new filter and place the old one behind that. I have been keeping a close eye on all the water readings and everything seems to be working.

Aquaclear filters aren't very expensive. Not sure why they're bothering offering all that carbon. Maybe they can't get rid of it any other way.

look on craigslist i got an "aquaclear 500" it filters up 150g tanks and is 500gph for 15 $$$ thats a steals ya just gotta search a bit but gauranteed u find wat u need
