Test strips aren't very accurate. You should get liquid kits, like API. These are also cheaper in the long run.

what are the tests called, like what would I ask for at the store? just a nitrate and ammonia test kit?

Get a FW test kit for now. As your SG rises, you'll need to switch to SW for pH. I think the other ones are still good, though.

Ok so I got the tests, changed some more water and will do them when I get home from work.
I also got some additional media from a very healthy aquarium to put in my filter.

Great! Let us know how it looks! You may or may not have ammonia/nitrites. If you do, do a water change. If you don't, check again later today or in the morning.

All appears to be well, gonna keep up the water changes.
Unfortunately my heater is being weird. The water was 81 so I backed the heater knob down just enough so it just turned off and left it there. When I go thome the temperature was at 76. It appears to not know when to turn on and off, it is VERY old so its no big surprise. Its 200 watts so I wanted to use it since that is more than enough for my tank. I have a 100 watt and a 50 watt so I will test those now.
Also, one of these guys is really impressing with the color changing. the more active it is being the brighter the green seems to be.

Be careful using old, unstable heaters. They've been known to stay on & boil fish!

Interesting, so the tube style heaters are known to fail after time?
I figured they might be ok, I use alot of electric heaters when I work on cars and many are very old and I have never had one fail or have a thermostat on one fail. but these are water based so I am sure they different.
This one turns on and off just when I get the temp I want i turn it a tiny bit down but it doesnt come back on and maintain temperature when the water temperature falls.
Also, has anyone used pad style under tank heaters? I have never seen this but I have a 450 watt (adjustable because that may be too much) heating pad that I use for cars that uses an adjustable temp sensor to turn on and off and it is dead accurate. Im temped to try this

haha alright I will just get another tube style one, I just hate how it looks and it makes me nervous that they like to crowd around it. I know that it can get hot enough to severely burn a person. I know the water around it will keep it cooler but is there any other options out there?

Yeah that would also be easier to block from them. One is playing around it right now as it is on and i dont want it to get burned.
On a side note the water appears to be more clear to me. maybe its some placebo effect from all the work I did but I swear it looks better already.

They came from freshwater and I just bumped it up slightly more than freshwater.
And what do you guys find they like to eat the best?
The petstore sold me freeze dried shrimp and pellets. They completely ignore it.
I didnt want them to starve so I gave them some minnows. They REALLY like those. Since I know that is really messy I skimmed ALL the remnants out immediately afterwards.
I hear I can just cut up seafood?
