So sorry Phledge. I have a puffer burried outside, next to a tree. You make a good point there...

I wouldn't worry about the toxins, go ahead and bury it or if you feel better wrap it up in several sealed ziploc bags before throwing it in the garbage. There's a theory anyways that puffers in captivity lose a lot of their toxicity, that the wild ones maintain it from something in their natural diet.
I'm sorry you lost him, Mbu's are one heck of a special species of fish.
For what its worth with carbon.. its only really active for a few days anyways so unless you were adding a new packet ever 2-3 days it wasn't doing much. Carbon is pretty much one of those mostly useless money making schemes the big companies like to use.. granted it does have its uses, like removing medications, etc, but since it has a very limited active time once the package is opened, its pointless to put a new package in periodically. In fact, doing so can hurt your biofilter, since the carbon makes a great home for bacteria.. when you throw out the cartridge and put in a new one, you're throwing out all that nitrificating bacteria that was living in the old one.

Now as an air filter. Nothing better than carbon. Can remove any smell you throw at it. Anyway, Extremely sorry about your loss.
