I vote red-eyes... You can house more than one in a 55 gallon aquarium and they're pretty active most of the time.

NO, It just happens that you wanted one or the other.

I actually have a tankful of redeye puffers, in fact, I have 3 different species in that one tank. I know some people don't agree with that, but these are all getting along really well together. Of course I have the tank heavily planted too, so that makes a difference, as well as having coconut shells, slate caves, and other things they can hide in and around.

I think the redeyes are beautiful, especially the males. Also, they are very responsive towards me when I come near the tank.

Before I got them, I had read that the redeye puffers can be aggressive, but I've not seen any real showing of aggression. Sometimes the males will chase other males, as well as some of the females out of his territory, but I also have 3 cory's in there, 2 gobies and 3 Rasboras - never once have I see ANY of the puffers chasing or nipping them. So IMO, I think redeyes are a good choice for a big tank that you want to see movement and puffers interacting with one another.

The key to not making them hide is to have a very well planted/decorated aquarium.

it doesn't have to be pretty, just lots of cover and stuff.

I have my abei in 55 and had my miurus in a 35. Both are fairly active when i show up at the tank.

I also have a lot of easy to grow plants and rocks (this results in no flow though). Giant Hygros, Java ferns, Crypt Wendii, tape grass, sunset hygro, java moss. All this makes the actually aquarium fairly dim near the middle and bottom. I will lose a few branches here and there, but because the plants are so hearty, it doesn't really suffer any issues.

Agreed, it seems the more hiding places available, the more out in the open most fish are, feeling secure they could retreat almost anywhere in the tank if feeling threatened.
