another picture showing the severity, I believe I may have inadvertantly caused the issue myself by overfeeding him. I had feed him 2-3 cockles 3 times a week for the last couple of years when it occured to me that he looked a little thin compared to other mbu's so i decided to up his feeding to 3-4 cockles 3 times a week which pleased him no end! until this happened

I'm sorry its not just a simple case of it being pushed back in mikweg. I hope you can find a vet that can help that is fairly local to you.

Does he still have a healthy appetite with his current condition.

Definitely worth a go with this method mikweg if it worked on this one no reason it cant for you.

yeah had a look but this is deffo not worms - I have found a vet who can sort it out on Monday but I'll have to keep him happy till then. thanks for the help I'll keep you all informed.

Oh my, that is a bad prolapse. My one Figure 8 used to get them after a big meal ocassionally, and they just always went back in on their own, but never that bad. His were never that far out, or that red/irritated looking, just a pale pink color.

Wow. I don't care what the vet says, I'd probably try to very gently get it back in there if it doesn't go on its own in a few days. Don't feed in the mean time, even if he does feel like eating.

Personally I wouldn't be very hopeful, but these guys really surprise us quite often.

I believe Puffer Queen has recommeneded pushing it back in with a pencil eraser.

Well ~I feel utterly miserable now Barry took a definate turn for the worst today not moving or even responding much if I touched him, having failed to find a vet I could reach after having rung literally very one I could think of from the RSPCA to The London Aquarium I decided enough is enough and put him out of his misery.
I spoke to my LFS whom I trust and based on his prognosis put him to sleep with a large overdose of clove oil.
He is now buried in the rockery where I know he'll be undisturbed.
I can't express how gutted I am, he was a member of our family and the only one always guarenteed to great me enthusiastically ever time!

I am soooo sorry, you have my condolences and I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better, but I know you must really be heartbroken. Very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. I would have done the same if it had been my fish, it had to be quite painful and uncomfortable, not to mention the risk of bacterial infection.
