One idea (and please correct me anybody if I'm wrong) is to use Prime, it dechlorinates and neutralizes ammonia. It won't get rid of the ammonia but it will change it to it's nontoxic form. It might be a good idea to keep around if your having issues with the ammonia levels. This would go with water changes, shouldn't replace them. I would think it would be handy for emergencies at least. It also shouldn't affect your bio filter. The bio filter should still be able to process the neutralized ammonia. Again this is how I think it works, if I'm wrong someone please correct me. Good luck with your little fellow.
