Just read the articles that have been posted, along with basically everything in the Library.
I'm going to have to disagree with Imsmith on this: Talking to your local fish store (LFS) is probably *not* going to help you at all. Unless you have a really, truly wonderful LFS, and these are *veryveryvery* rare, they'll tell you a whole bunch of hooey, either because they don't know what they're talking about and have done no research on the animals that they sell, or because they want to convince you that the fish is easy to care for, so that you'll be more willing to buy it.
And, folks, let's be nice, okay? We're talking to a newbie here. There's nothing wrong with being uneducated about fish, and definitely nothing wrong with seeking advice and knowledge.

+1, my best advice is to pretty much totally ignore anything a LFS will tell you about pufferfish. Especially if you get it at Walmart, which I highly suggest against. Almost every single question you have asked is answered in the linkes given to you above to articles in our Library.

Figure 8s are not fresh water. They are brackish.

Some people have argued this point. Their natural environment, it seems, is freshwater, but they live far longer and seem healthier in brackish water, so that's how we've classified them, and that's how they're kept by most owners. Your LFS probably sells them as FW, correct? Most LFSs don't bother to keep brackish fish in brackish water, and they tell new owners to use aquarium salt, which is actually a medication. For a F8, you'd use marine salt.

Lucky. *humph* My good one only has puffers by request, and the bad one keeps the GSPs in fresh and the DPs in "brackish" (AKA aquarium salt added).

It's just the shape of the tank. Google search for aquariums and you'll find thousands of different types.
