New Puffer Additions

Hows the two congo's in the same tank working out for you, is there any aggression between them??? but i must admit, i was also quite surprised myself when i first noticed homer change to a really light color where he had really light brown patches on him, kinda like what you see in the pufferpedia, which really makes me wonder what the color changes actually mean...

The Congo's are getting on very well together, they are male & female. We even have a yellowtail eel that lives in the tank too, it hides in a shipwreck ornament. I had intended to get it out of the tank before the puffers went in, but it kept hiding and I wasn't able to catch it, so I thought I'd leave it and hopefully they can all live together.
My Fangs puffers are doing well together also, not seen any aggression at all with them, and I keep expecting to, but I do have alot of plants in the tank, so I'm sure that helps break up the line of sight.
I'd also like to report that the 2 C lorteti that I put in my C irrubesco tank are also doing very well. Those lorteti are beautiful. They all come to the glass front when I approach the tank, thinking they are getting fed, and it's funny because before you get close you can't see not one of them (very heavily planted tank), and then all the sudden, you see nearly all of them!!
So I am very pleased that, so far, all my puffers seem to be getting along with each other. I realise that may change, but I am prepared.

In regards to your Homer, I think you have a very unusual and lovely puffer there.

Thanks for the compliment, and i must say, its good to hear that all your puffers are getting along nicely... makes me almost tempted to try that out when i move and have some bigger tanks to play with, but i guess this will all have to wait till i move though...

You know, it's funny because I've been put down for housing some of my freshwater puffers together, and yet I've read in different places that you can house a Palembang with suvattii. Now, if those two can be together, why can't I try other combinations? I mean, you don't know until you try it, right? I would never put up with any of my puffers being harassed or beaten up by any other tankmates, puffers or not, but I do keep an eye on all my fish to see that they are getting along. I've had very good luck with different species cohabitating together, but I think it's important that I also say that having a well planted tank is a major reason for it working.
Oh, more news ... I'm upgrading today! My husband will be picking up a 4-foot tank that we bought over the weekend. I'm going to move my puffers around because I have my Baileyi and Congo both in tanks that are a bit too small, so I'm going to move them all once that big 4-foot is cycled. I also have a 3-footer that I'm going to put into use.
So I've got alot of work ahead of me today, and it's also water change day for my big community tank!!!

Yay for setting up a new tank, coz at the end of the day no matter how tedious it maybe, we all know how much we really enjoy setting up a new puffer tank, just surprised your better half will let you get another tank... since g/f has stated that after we move i'll be limited to 3 tanks max!!! but i do agree that some puffers will mix together with other fish / puffers, and i have a little bit of a theory about this...

Basically, based on what i've noticed from Homer is that he won't touch his Tank mate whos a tire track eel, and been in the tank since i started this tank, but then any new additions since Homers gone in seem to end up being a potential meal, so i am stating to wonder if you have other fish in your tank BEFORE you place a new (young) puffer in there that maybe (just maybe) they will actually live together in harmony???

Well I bought 2 suvattii together, they were siblings, and they were in a tank together and were fine. But then I bought 2 new tanks and had intentions of moving the suvattii to the bigger tank. That's when I was getting the Baileyi. I didn't know I would be getting another juvenile suvattii at the same time. So what I did is, I put the new younger suvattii into the new tank first, and then I added the 2 older juvenile suvattii that were in my other tank. There's been no aggression at all, in fact, the younger juvenile has buddied up to the older juvenile, they actually sit under the internal filter together. The other older juvenile stays at the other end of the tank, but I've not seen any of them acting aggressively to each other at all. I have no doubt that if I were to add any other tankmates to the suvattii tank that it would end up dinner. They actually stalk my gravel vacuum and attack it!! I am extra careful now about putting my hands in their tank, or any of the puffer tanks for that matter.

And 3 tanks!!?? Tell your g/f you need more than that. With the 4-footer we're getting today, plus the 3-footer that's upstairs, that will make 11 tanks for me. And I think I will have to stop there because we are truly out of space for any more tanks. But at least I will know I've done the best for my puffers by giving them more tank space.

I'd love to have a MBU, but I also know that I can't possibly provide the sort of tank a puffer like that would require.

I've not seen the yellowtail eel that's in with the Congo puffers, I wonder if it became a midnight snack last night!

Arrrggghhh... 11 TANKS, i'm green with envy!!! i could only wish i had the space for that many puffer tanks, but living in an apartment doesn't leave much space for living as it is, let alone that many tanks... although i have to agree, i would love to have that means to be able to keep an MBU, but i don't think i could afford the up-keep, nor the space to house such a large tank... although a nice 4000 litre wall tank would have been a nice addition in the new flat...
