every elder literature says that this species is found in fresh- to brackish water. i do not know any literature talking about seawater!
as all of the fish that got imported in the last months really seem to be from freshwater, one should try that!
my did not well even in low-end brackish water and also not in "pure" freshwater. therefore i still keep them im freshwater with just a little salt in it. very hard freshwater should also do it...

Looks like we can rule out high brackish to marine as being no good. FW also doesn't seem to work. One guy in that thread said his were in brackish and they were doing fine. So I guess low brackish would be ok. Seems like very low brackish would be ideal though.

So do you mean an sg of 1.005 or less?

Sounds like even less to me.. Probably 1.002ish, enough salt to buffer the water but not to get too salty.

Martin, thank you very much, I'll go edit the Pufferpedia entry to show we don't know for sure but very alkaline freshwater or very low salinty brackish seem to have the best results.

Well...someone certainly likes his snails. Luckily I work at a pet store, so I spent time cruising the tanks picking out snails. He's LOVING them. I'm gonna run out of snails long before he tires of them. What else do you suggest for food? I tried thawed squid(from my marine tank food supply) and he ignored it.

Try frozen (thawed & rinsed) mysis shrimp, worms & FD plankton.

mine do eat every freshwater and saltwater frozen food of small size.

That's good to know. I've been telling everyone high brackish! Although the puffers have not lived long enough to even to go low brackish. It seems they had been dying within days, while still in freshwater with no salt. I'll go back and repost at the other forum what I have learned about them, just in case someone else get's another one.

well I'm certainly no expert in the least, but this guy is doing well at 1.008. He's perkier and eating now (that I found good food). It's been two weeks since we received him, and he's eaten brine shrimp now as well. I'm amazed at their personality!! So attentive and curious. Bitten by the puffer bug?

Please keep us updated on the progress. It seems that we all know so little about these little guys and they are popping up everywhere. I'm glad to know that he's doing so well. Keep up the good work.

sorry i did not recognize this post earlier!
i do not think that you should edit your pedia this way! there is still evidence that this species does also occure in brackish water. just the ones that have been importeted in the last months really seem to be from freshwater. so either this could be a migratory species (doubtful!) or there are some populations living in fresh- some other in brackish water.
therefore the information shoul be that this species is found as well in fresh- as in brackish waters. it seems to be important to know what the water the fish actually has been caught from was. those ones from brackish water should be kept in such water. those ones caught in freshwater should be kept in freshwater with small amounts of salt.
but seawater is something i have never heard of!

Hi: i am new to the forum and i have one of these little guy's and i am keeping him in low end brackish-anything i have found on the net don't have too much info so i guess the best is low end brackish.And he is a very friendly little guy as he was beat up pretty bad when i got him.So i have been treating just with 50% water changes and he seems to be responding very well, and very curious too.This morning when i did his water he was fluttering around the tube really checking evrything out lol and was very interested and boy do they love snails- i can't get them fast enough for him. But he eats b/w and shrimp he is not picky lol- But i too wish there was more info out there on these little guy's as they are great little fish.I also know they are very intelligent and have to be stimulated as i have a hampster tube in the tank for him-one end there is no way out ,but the top of the tube there is 2-ways out and he figured that out in a minute lol so i think a lot of stimulation for him as well and boy do they know their owner's lol The other morning i thought i would sneak in the kitchen for a cold bottle of water and front and center he was waiting for me lol little face against the glass. They are just so interactive just all around great little guys. I hope we can find more info on these little ones. thanks bella

Martin Hi. refered to another tread on this puffer. I had one of these but sold it two weeks ago to this forums very own Woland.

the fish lived here in SG 1.004 for 6 months.
