the reason GSP's need 30 gallons is because without it, they will eventually become stunted, and life a shorter less healthy life. If housed properly they will grow to 6", other wise, they become stunted and parish much sooner. Also the GSP's need full SW when adults, and the f8 prefers low end brackish. Clearly not compatible.

I'm sorry mr_jason but keeping a fish that can live into their teens for 7-8 months in improper conditions, isn't saying much for the future of your puffers. I kept 3 of them in a 55g till adulthood (6") & found that there was not nearly enough room for them in there. I actually think they would be happy in a 55 with just 1 adult GSP & maybe a few smaller fish like damselfish.

they are in a larger tank now, and doing very well. do you think that they might be hurting since they were in that tank for so long? i couldn't afford a larger one and any time i talked to someone in a pet store they didn't say anything was wrong. plus, i couldn't find this forum since it moved so i had no way of knowing.

Honestly, puffers are a lot of work, and you might be better served starting with something easier. Once you've got some more experience under your belt, maybe give puffers another go.
It's really sad that most LFS don't even ask people if they know what cycling a tank is, or if they have test kits, or anything like that. It's frustrating.
