Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
Red cherries are a LOT smaller than ghost shrimp, chances are good they'll be able to hide better or be ignored. Thankfully, since they breed so easy they are pretty cheap now and therefore not an expensive experiment.

Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
i've never been able to find them around here. That would be good food for my saps and dps as well as my arrowhead. I just hope my Marble crayfish start making babies cause thats gonna be my food supply for all my puffers when that gets goin.

people in aquira central and monster fish keeper forum always sell em in the classified section like $0.50 each but of course you have to pay for shipping.

Your tank looks good.
I don't really know much about those puffers but i would guess that the more decor the better, if you use live plants then you can always cut them back if they encroach on the swimming space.
What i've read in this thread is that the puffers will dig - with that in mind i'm slightly worried that yours might dig around your stone structure to the left and that the top stone might fall off with disastrous consequences

Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
Check out my gallery of my arrowhead tank. I have a lava rock and he is burried right next to it almost exclusively. I just added a bit more decor myself today. If the stone is burried in the sand it would be almost impossible to knock it over.Iliveinazoo wrote: What i've read in this thread is that the puffers will dig - with that in mind i'm slightly worried that yours might dig around your stone structure to the left and that the top stone might fall off with disastrous consequences
come to think of it my tank looks nothing like that anymore same rock and bog wood but just positioned alot different.

Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
i did think of that and may drillthe stones and put dowels in, but they are about 2inches into the sand, thats why i got them in the deep bit, but i'll keep an eye one itIliveinazoo wrote:Your tank looks good.

Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
ok, plants will be here tomorrow, got a huge bit of bog wood today, it reminds me of a naked women, you'll see why wheni get picture
i'm gonna try and plant some plants on the wood, its got like two legs and a body, like an upside down Y but longer flatter legs, looks ace! covers a good two thrids of the tank though, nice hidey hole also, but now my fale plants dont look so good, tomorro's plan is get some black paper!

But two things I can tell you.. the tank will look 100% better with a background on it (even just a sheet of construction paper or posterboard).
And that window is going to give you trouble.. any sunlight shining on the tank will grow a ton of algae. (if that is, in fact, a window behind the tank)
Looks good though! You went with a very fine sand, you do know you'll need to stir it once a week to prevent anaerobic pockets, correct? Last thing you want is your puffer to dive into a bubble of toxic fumes under the sand.
sunlight isnt a factor we live in the UK. If rain and rubbish weather affected tanks god help us haha

Re: How heavy decor for an arrowhead
your LFS should have a plant substrate addative. I can't remember the name of it; i just started messing with live plants and since my java fern is on my bog wood i didn't get it.
You just mix it in with the subsrate and it will help feed your plants. I don't know how it works in sand the guy at my LFS said that sand is harder to grow live plants in but in a lot of lake in my state there is only sand as the lake bed and plenty of plants so....

Can I 3rd it?!andy198712 wrote:yeah i'll second that lol

If you're using tap water then the plants should get most of the trace elements that they need through that but if you're using RO water or you notice any defeciencies then you may need to use a liquid fertiliser (NPK+trace elements) and you possibly may need to use root tabs.
It really depends on the type of plants that you want and the speed that you want them to grow.

java fern and/or java moss (actually any type of moss) will grow on your bogwood also anubias species grow above the substrate and so will grow on your bogwood as well.
