help please new puffer
Re: help please new puffer
They can be fine in high brackish but marine is slightly better in captivity. From the pufferpedia:
Care: Requires medium to high-end brackish water, and usually thrives in marine conditions.

Re: help please new puffer
GSP are rarely to never found in full SW in the wild...
SW is just easier to keep a stable environment, so that's what most people keep them in. I will have mine in full marine when he's big enough...

In the wild adult GSPs are found in FW anyway, and young ones in BW. But in aquariums it is just the other way around for some reason.

Re: help please new puffer
Adult GSPs live in the brackish, but go upstream to spawn. that's why almost all GSPs in the aquarium trade come as FW.

Yes, although rarely found in the ocean, they seem to be very happy in SW in our tanks.

I have read in many places that adults live in FW, not just to breed. Here's one quote which I found:
Adults inhabit freshwater streams, rivers and floodplains.

This is from Fishbase. I don't always give them a lot of credence, as just because they may have just not caught any GSPs in BW, doesn't mean there aren't any in there.

Well one place was weird and I don't really know what it is:
http://www.broad.mit.edu/annotation/tet ... round.html
Then I saw it on wikipedia as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodon_nigroviridis
And I'm sure I did see it somewhere else but I can't find that again. I know they're not the most reliable sources but I just thought that seeing as a few places have said the same thing....oh I don't know, just usually you don't get loads of websites saying the same thing when it's completely wrong. But hey, I've never seen GSPs in the wild so I don't really have a clue.

Re: help please new puffer
Wouldn't that be the coolest? I've seen S&S, porcpuffs, giant porcpuffs & burrfish in the ocean, along with several species of tobies. Oh yeah, also saw Red Sea DF puffers in schools!I've never seen GSPs in the wild
Here's one:

Oops, sorry for the hijack!

Re: help please new puffer
Wow I would love to see that. I am thinking about either oceanography or marine biology at uni, so maybe one day I will be able to see them. More likely if I do marine biology I guess, not so likely if I do oceanography, but oh well.
Yeah sorry for the hijack here. My fault for going on about wild GSPs.

Sorry to say, there isn't much career with either of those. My cousin has a degree in MB, lives in FL & still wound up having to teach.

Re: help please new puffer
Oh I know. But I don't really know what career to go into after the course, cause it doesn't necessarily have to be in research, there's other things you could do with it. My other consideration was geology actually. Marine biology is the one with the least career opportunities, but I think it is bottom of the list at the moment anyway. More likely to be oceanography or geology.
