Fuge doesn't have to be in sump--it can also be plumbed seperatly, like mine.

Yep, as above. Usually though, if you have a sump plumbed into your tank, you would put the fuge in there. Whatever works best for you though, there are few set rules in marine anyhow.

I wanted a large fuge where I could put a DSB, rubble & lots of cheato for pods to grow in. Here's my system:
20g Sump under tank (needs water)

Right side

Fuge plumbed next to tank (flows back to tank via gravity)
