the flat is 1940's ...

how do you work out which way the joists go? How do you know what a supporting wall is... i know the outside ones are, i know which ones are studd walls... but the wall it will be going against has the stairs from the front door to the hallway on the other side..

its the wall with the living room on one side, and the stairwell down to the front door on the other.. if that makes sense...

would that be a stud or a weight baring wall...?

A well constructed older building such as you described can be extremely sturdy compared to today's construction, but this is far from guaranteed. If your building's roof sags; if floors are springy in the middle, are uneven or sag slightly; or if plaster walls or ceilings have a number of long cracks you may run into problems. Your overall impressions of how well built your building is, may also be a good indicator of its ability to support your tank. Also, make sure the floor is flat and level so your tank is properly supported and won't crack.
