I think another reason they haven't bred in captivity is because we don't really know how to duplicate the process, since they move through out different salinities and such. But good luck, I hope you succeed.

they would swim upstream to multiply right? perhaps lowering the salinity to 0 would help? just my 2 cents, I am neither a gsp expert or necessarily a puffer expert

Salinity fluctuation has already been tried.

By all means umbrella, try. We'd love to find a technique that works.

It seems like it's really tough to get them to do it, we just aren't sure of the triggers. It might have something to do with changes in sun movement, or something we have no way of controlling. Or some part of the tank environment might keep them in a celibacy mode all the time.

Ooo I will most definitely try. I believe I read somewhere that a good number of fish will use a spot that is calm water ( cause little ones can't combat strong current ) BUT I think the key might have something to do with oxygen rich waters... like a stretch of water that you might find AFTER the rapids.. or underneath the waterfalls that they seem to love so much. I don't know about your GSPs but mine like water falling on their head. Thats not all there is to it though, I am going to try a combination of things including lighting, currents and salinity in addition to other things. My BIGGEST problem is the fact that I can't tell who is male and who is female. I will take new photos of them each... but I think my current problem is that I have 2 female GSPs whom are old enough to do this and no males. I think the male of the tank is the Sabahensis and uh.. I don't think the females are impressed by him at all. lol. So if you guys are up for it... I will post pics of them here a little later and maybe you guys can help me by just posting whether it looks male or female to you ( if you had to guess ). I know guessing is no surefire way... but if I have 10 people saying that one of them just simply looks like it would be male/female to them..then hey, thats a start. I'll use the popular vote system for now.

I will certainly try, and I will most definitely post my results.

You could probably get enough DNA from a skin rubbing with a Qtip, PCR dna replication and testing works with TINY amounts of DNA, a cheek swabbing from a person is enough, I'd imagine you'd only have to rub through the slime coat a tiny bit to get a sample, minimal discomfort.
