I'm confused now lol. Stupid synonym nonsense... why can't they just pick one name and roll with it ? Anyways... wtf is an A. Silus ? Couldn't find it in the pedia and it looks a lot like my Modestus. Unless this one little source here is correct and we are straight up missing one.

Actually, an A. Silus is different from an A. Modestus, and I think that there should be a PufferPedia for it as well. The Silus is a little bit smaller, with gold eyes and a gold upper body. The modestus can get to be about 4 1/2 inches and is green with green eyes. I've had both kinds of puffers, and they have two completely different personalities.

Yes, I am planning on adding some decor. Do you think that the sand works well? What would you folks suggest for decor? I'm still looking for test kits...

If anybody else has a Silus or a Modestus and would like to share pictures of their tank(s)/ puffer(s), please do!

I've found the modestus to be deeper-bodied & the silus to have a pointier snout & be much shinier than the modestus. Maybe Corvus can chime in here.

Well... I'd say Chris' decor is perfect! I love the good aquascaping we can build with sand/rock/plants... It gets so cozy...

My silus is way less picky than my old modestus. He used to spit out bloodworms that accidentally floated into his mouth. This guy ate krill today! Yay!

The genus Auriglobus has 5 described species: amabilis, modestus, nefastus, remotus, silus formerly placed in the genus Chonerhinos. They are not easy to tell apart and it is well possible all 5 have appeared in trade, but have been labelled modestus or silus. I've seen the nefastus label a few times in Europe, too. I would not trust the names with which the animals appear in trade too much.

Regrading modestus/silus:

- snout of silus is - like PP said - more pointed, to be more exact the lips are more protruding, the snout is slanting
- Caudale peduncle (the part were the tail-fin is fixed to) of silus is more slender
- spines can be directed to backwards and upwards at silus, they are exclusively poiting upwards in modestus.
- modestus gets longer and generally is more deep-bodied (as PP said) and heavier
- silus can have less finrays on dorsal and anal fin, but may have as much as modestus

Adults are better to ID, the young may look pretty similar.

BTW there is a "monster" version of these puffers: Chonerhinos naritus, a kinda one foot brackish version of modestus. Know or have seen this one?

And that puffer guy looks pretty big! And when they look big, they probably are.

Hope i'm not offending anybody here, but that is one ugly puffer.... I guess that to some people *COUGH* shannon *COUGH* think my Silus is ugly. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (anybody ever seen that twilight zone episode?)

Well... not the cutest puffer I've ever seen. Hard to believe it's related to my cutie modestus. Lots of folks don't really appreciate him either I thinnk, because he's not as cute as the others.

I think when they are young many people would have a problem to tell them apart from a modestus.
