May I just add about the substrat that a far cheaper method that a lot of use over here is to use regular garden soil called John Innes no2, it has to be No2 due to the make up and lack of additives and plant hormones. you add an inch or two of this at the base and then top with either sand or gravel. You can do a whole 80G tank for about £20 even cheaper if you use play sand. It works a treat trust me, you don't need specialist aquatic stuff

i was also thinking of using eco-complete on my planted brackish tank -- the idea was to change it over slowly - i currently have black sand/tan-colored gravel combo and im not liking the look any more --

one question, does anyone think there is a risk of lowering the PH with this substrate -- it says its packed with black water, so that makes me think it might knock my PH down -- would a good washing reduce the risk?

It comes pre rinsed. I don't think it will bring down the PH, and if it does the salt will even it out.

I don't think it would effect the pH at all. It's just pre-rinsed so it doesn't cloud up the tank.
