my new puffer help id

think i will sump or trade the maroon then ,she been fine so far but she may be young but is growing very fast! she has her own spot in tank and nobody bothers her, last night mr puffa (thats what we have called him) went right into her home and she backed off straight away!
mr puffa been with us three days now and wont stop eating!got him eating frozen foods now and off at the weekend to get some fresh for him.he has the black rim round his tail so think your right about id! he is the camo colour all the time now, he is eating well like i said and comes begging for food whenever i go near the tank! bit worried about his tail though its closed tight all the time is this not a sign of stress? could this be because new suroundings? is there anything i can do do reduce this? its strange because he doesnt behave like he is stressed.

It takes them a while to become comfortable with their new surroundings. He looks very healthy. I would just keep an eye on him and give him at least a week or two to become comfortable in his new home. Make sure he's not being chased by any fish or picked on. I had a freshwater puffer that took almost 3 weeks before it would flare it's tail. Now he's king of the tank. Congratulations on your new puffer!

Very nice immaculatus. They are pretty common but I never seem to catch any for sale...you are lucky and he looks pretty happy in there...

A fish store here always has some Arothron, but rarely the immaculatus. That's strange, because I think that it may be the best suited species of this genus for aquaria. They generally (!) appear to be pretty peaceful (for a puffer), usually stay under a foot, and IMO seem to be less prone to some diseases compared to e.g. A. nigropunctatus and others.

I would agree on the disease resistance factor. I have only ever kept one immaculatus as they do seem very difficult to find and I must agree that they are well suited to the aquarium life given proper sized tank and nutrition. When I had mine, it was apparent at the time that one of my dogface puffers had internal parasites (simply by the feces being very white and somewhat stringy - also ick was prevalent is this particular setup -I had long ago) - the immaculatus never seemed to get either despite these two living in close quarters and sharing food of course. I was able to successfully treat the dogface in QT and return him - they both live for about 7 and 9 years respectively - they were about 5 inches when I obtained them (by the way - I only can quote these things b/c I keep very detailed records ever since I can remember - a absolute MUST for any serious aquarist!!!)

Very sorry to hear about the loss of your other fish! Yes occasionally our favorite fish will do this - good thing they have so much personality

ALL puffers will eat crabs, snails and shrimp. Many of them will pick at corals and fish seem to be hit or miss. This is why we insist that people do as much research as possible before buying one.
