i dreamt all night of doing water changes. i woke up this moring ( in my dream) to find algae in the tank the size and shape of kelp.
i woke up this morning for real to find a dead puffer.
So, he got a few nice words and the flush.
Then I tested the water-
pH 7.4
ammo 0
nitrite .25
nitrate 20
So, I still have one puffer. He seems to be doing just fine, he cruises around the tank and eats regularly. I'll continue to do daily water changes. I think I'll get some crushed coral as I'm afraid that the pH is lower than 7.4 cause that is the bottom end of the test spectrum.
Thanks all for your help and support. I'm still in alittle shock cause he looked like he was doing better. But I guess everything that I did was just too late for him.

So sorry you lost him. You did what you could for the little puffer.

awww... sorry you couldn't save him. Your nitrates must have been really high if they're at 20 now after water changes....
puffs really struggle with that level of pollution, when other fish would be quite happy with 20 nitrate.
Unless you can get a bigger tank then you're going to have to wc all the time to keep your remaining puff happy...
Hope you can work something out. x

well, the tank they were/remaining puffer is still in is a 40 gal. i think that the combination of overfeeding and not removing enough waste was the problem. I'll be staying on top of that from now on. But with the daily water changes since i lost the one, i've been deep cleaning and removing ALOT of waste. I've been feeding less so there should be less waste and once the tank is actually clean it should be easier up keep.

I think you should be able to save this one. Perfect size tank for a singleton.

this morning's test results are in...
pH 7.5 (got some crushed coral)
ammo 0
nitrite .25
nitrate ~15
not too bad considering i worked late and passed out on the couch when i got home yesterday and missed yesterday's WC. <slaps self on the hand> Looks like today's going to be a rainout at work so I'm going to get on the WC this morning. I'm anxious to try out my new python!
