The Super Mario idea is awesome.
I was recently thinking about how cool it would be to make a space themed tank (star trek nerd) with a black substrate and some funky fake plants and then planets floating around. I was going to put holes in the through the planets so the fish could swim though. It would be really awesome but my description is kind of lame sounding, lol.

IMO, any type of aqua scaping that is different from the norm is awesome.

I have found looking on sites at other peoples fish tanks has given me a lot of ideas for different themes.

All I need now is the extra cash to buy the decor!

He's got his on there somewhere not sure where. But it's lots of step by step on making cool environments.I'm kinda leaning towards a natural rocky style background with built in caves and hiding places.

For some reason I got a liking to the Ester Island statues. So I'm thinking I might carve a few of them to put in the gravel.

Just remember--you'll be stirring your substrate weekly.

I'm working on my background. I put on two coats of cement, but they were too thin and started to crack a lot, so I went with a third "coat" where I spattered thick amounts of cement all over it. I hope this one sticks. It's pretty heavy so far, probably 3-4 lbs at least.

You should try using mortar/thin-set rather than cement. It's what they use under tiles. Some of it has acrylic that helps it stick better and increases the strength.

I also prefer the natural look. I try to use real drift wood, real rock structures, live plants, etc whenever possible. I would imagin that the fish would feel more comfortable in a more "natural" environment as well.

One thing i saw that was pretty cool was having a sanday substrate and buy one of those old looking cars with the optional bubble thing that lifts the front. Then you bury it halfway in the sand so it looks like the car has been abandoned there.

It looks like something that can actually happen you know? Like someones car fell in a lake.

The only thing that i dont like is that decor is so expensive these days ><

i love the beach idea but sea if you can find like an old "woody" looking car or somthin with surf boards on it, thatd be awesome.

haha, wouldn't that be cool, having a sand substrate with a car halfway buried in it. Then have some surfboards sticking out.

While im at it, why not add some picket fences that are like broken.
