When your puffer is just TOO fat

I love my girlfriend but sometimes her fish are an issue unto themselves.... A 5-6" dogface that is fast becoming morbidly obese. He's been put in the 210 with our golden (A. Meleagris) and a few other fish as he was getting just too fat in the 75 gallon.

Please note the above is strictly "unpuffed" and he is just that porky....

Killing with kindness? Causes fatty liver disease & shorter lifespan. Have a good stern talk w/her. That fish should be on a 1x/wk diet.

He is quite shy/timid and now has to compete for food w' the big boys in the 210. While its hard to absolutely ensure his intake (unless he is in qt) that should thin him down. He doesn't swim around that much, kinda just does the "brown blimp" act.

He was dominating the feedings in the 75 he was in previously so his old roomates should also benefit...

My puffer that got stuck to a power head is pretty close to being that fat in the picture above he is a bit longer though he lives in a 220 gallon. I just rescued a dog face puffer last weekend from my local fish store that I have watched waste away, they weren't and still don't feed their puffers any snails so they can't file their teeth down. I watched this poor guy that they had for sale 59.00 starve for the past 2 months, I thought if he is still there buy the time I get my 75 cycled the rest of the way I will get him and fatten him up. Well he is doing great now, eating snails teeth are almost normal length now, and is eating like a pig, getting his color back and swimming much more. I just keep getting conflicting information on what size tank he should be in, I wan't to keep him but if he will be uncomfrotable in the 75 in the long run I will have to find him a new home once he is healthy. His other tank mates are 2 yellow tail damsels and a baby picasso trigger. Thanks

Looks like he's asking if the dog face can stay in his 75 and currently lives in it with 2 damsels and a baby trigger.

I was asking if the new puff that I rescued will be able to stay in the 75 gallon tank long term. He is about 5 inches now.

I don't think so; I'd go bigger. If he is alone then maybe. What are the dimensions of your tank?

Man that puffer is Huge , looks like big ball of dough. Slimming down is a must.

Update: he is greatly slimmed down now, working on some new pics. While far from thin, he doesn't look like an aquatic jabba anymore.

As for the gent w' the rescue puffer....you could do it for a few months if you have a protein skimmer on the 75. Eventually you will have to upgrade but if your filtration/skimming is in order he will do fine in the standard 75g. (48x18x18 approx) If he only has a damsel and baby trigger to contend with. Just keep an eye on that trigger, they grow quick!

I'm not a guy, don't know know that got determined. LOL. Are you saying that the trigger I have in there will need to find a new home, Could I put him in my other tank a 220 with a dog face puff, raccoon butterfly fish, foxface lo,1 domino damsel and sebae clown, niger trigger? Or am i at my limit. I have protein skimmers on all my tanks.
