arothron hispidus "Stars and Stripes" with other f

Post by Snausy »

Hi everyone, I just got my new Stars n Stripes(thx kelly) from the LFS and now I'm looking at moving him into a 100 gallon. He is only about 5-6 inches long now so we have time before I get the 200+ gallon tank going.

I wondered what fish you guys keep with your stars and stripes puffer? What has worked, what hasn't? He seems pretty agressive, king of the tank. Not shy whatsoever.

We would both be much appreciative for the suggestions and ideas! Thx again.

Suggestions regarding janitors would be helpful too. Wonder what I can put in there to help keep things clean. What about super big snails that he can't get his mouth around?

I currently have my stars and stripes (12 inches) in a 600 gallon with 2 arothron reticularis, a porkfish, a diodon hystrix, a vlamingi tang, a sailfin tang and an orange spotted rabbitfish.

Before making the move to the 600, he was in a 240 gallon with a diodon liturosus, two arothron nigropunctatus (common gray and a dalmation), a spiniferum squirrel fish, a stellatus rabbitfish, a purple tang, and an auriga butterfly.

He started out as a baby (3 inches) in a 55 gallon with an auriga butterfly, a soldierfish, an orbiculated burrfish (cyclichthys orbicularis), a foxface and the porkfish that is in the 600 with him.

Hope this answers your question.

thx again kelly, I didn't realize you were talking about THAT tank when listing all your fish. :)

Well this is encouraging. I know all fish are different but the idea of a 250 with just one fish in it wasn't making me happy. ;)

Don't you go through a lot of salt? I'm a bit nervous about that.

I have 3200 gallons of saltwater. I do at least 25% water changes on the display systems every other week. The QT systems get 50 % or more weekly. Yes I do go through A LOT of salt

What are you gonna do w/all those FW fish in the 100g? Or do you have another empty one?

I'm going to move the fish in the 100 to a QT 29gal minus the gar and the leporinus which my friend wants in his tank...then I'm going to set up the 100 with some more LR and possibly add a couple tankmates for the S&S puffer...then a couple days later after those fish are comfy I'll add the puffer and then finally put the fish from the 29 into the 55hex and add a couple firemouths or something....put the 29 back in the closet.

Any suggestions or if you had a better idea let me know plz. I'm not set in my ways if a better way comes around.

whew...I better get started.

Love the eheim wet/dry canister. It almost ensures zero ammonia/nitrites.

forget adding firemouths now that I think of it. Maybe some congo tetras to fill up the top half of the tank...maybe some cardinal tetras...who knows.

I'm gonna have my hands full with the 100 marine for awhile methinks.

Sounds like a plan. I don't think that juripari will be too kind to tetras.

Depends on the juripari. I know some people that have them with neons/cardinals but this is in a pretty large planted tank, 180 gallons.
<80 gal> 2 GSPs & a Ceylon!
<75 gal> 3 Figure 8s & 1 Butterlfy Goby
<75 gal> *Empty*
<55 gal> 3 Gymnothorax polyuranodon (FW eel)
<30 long> Pair of Lorteti's & Irrubesco's, 1 DP, Endlers Livebearers, Clown Pleco, Royal Pleco, 2 Bumblebee Cats
<20 long> 4 Flounders
<4 gal> 2 Sparkling Gouramis & 3 ottos heavily planted

Well he's going in the 100 by himself for now.

My Juripari doesn't mess with other fish, he's relaxed like that. I've kept a big Juripari with congos before but not cardinals.
