Brackish Puffer Question and Tank Mates

Post by PuffyPuff88 »

Hello everyone I am new to the puffer world and am looking for some insight😁✨.

After spending the last week or so doing some research I have found that I either want an Amazon Puffer or Green-spotted Puffer. This being said:

1)Will the Amazon Puffer grow to be smaller than the Green Spotted Puffer?
From what I have read it appears that the Amazon puffer will be smaller (3ish-5ish) inches but I just wanted to verify this before I make any purchases as I have seen multiple answers posted about this on articles and Google in general.

2)What are some appropriate tank mates for these brackish water fish?
I originally was looking into Cory’s, mollys, hillstream loaches, rainbow sharks, cherry shrimp, and a few other fish but when I spoke to some of the employees at the store they informed me that these fish are purely freshwater and cannot be held in salivated waters despite what I had read on some articles.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and thank you so much in advance. I look forward to hearing back.
Thank you!!

Note:My tank is 50 gallons

I am so sorry it took me so long to respond! I was locked out of the site. How large is the tank?

Hey there not a problem and thanks for getting back to me.

That being said, I did end up purchasing an Amazon Puffer last week (8 days of having him) and he passed away this morning out of the blue!! All water parameters are perfect, I have a filter, heater which was at 77-78, and he was quarantined at my LFS before I purchased him. I have 3 Cory’s in the tank but they didn’t ever interact with my puffer the days I had him and since purchasing him he’s eaten with no issues even last night. There was no color fading nor spots on him. My dad was actually the one that informed me that he was swimming off this morning and when I checked he was swimming vertically and spinning at times. He eventually just swam to the bottom of the tank and passed 😔. I’m not sure what could have occurred or what I may have done wrong. Everything was perfect last night.

(Tank size:35 Gallons, puffer was a baby/younger side, corys as well)

:rip: Poor fella...
Sometimes we do our best & they still don't make it. SAPs are one of the more delicate species, succumbing to many issues.
