DP Snail Population?

Post by timehalt »

Hi everyone,
I have a 10 gal currently cycling. Once the cycle completes, I want to add a bunch of snails and leave them for a few days to get a good population going before adding my pea puffer. Two questions: do I have to worry about the pea puffer eating too many at once? And any reccomendations for types of snails? I was thinking mts or ramshorn.

They'll eat their fill. Then they'll kill the rest. This is how the murder bean do. It's best to have a separate tank for raising snails.

I have a solo puff in a 40g BF that has an established snail population but he hasn't gone on the rampage yet. I am considering moving a Yoyo loach in to the tank to help decimate the infestation.

What do you have to do to keep a separate tank for snails? Can it be as simple as an old school 'fish bowl'? Or do they need filtration and heat etc like a community tank?

I've used a kid's starting set tank for my snail colony. 5g tank, small internal filter that came with it, cheapest HOB light unit. No heater, no substrate, just a few moss balls and some duckweed to absorb NO3. First eggs were laid three days later, first generation is about 2-3mm now. I feed them cucumber and shrimp pellets. Other than siphoning some walrus from the bottom once every 2 weeks there's no maintenance needed for them.
