Baby Fahaka Puffer not growing

Post by Gatortrax »

I purchased a baby 1” fahaka from my lfs and have had him for about two months. I feed him twice a day with either snails, bloodworms, or thawed cut up pieces of clam. He is in a bare bottom 10 gallon tank by himself with a floating piece of anubias, a cave, and a sponge filter. I am hoping to start a scud culture for him soon. I change 25% of the water every two weeks. He eats ferociously (even for his size) and passes his food clean so I do not suspect IP’s. He has not grown since I got him and it is starting to worry me. Any help would be appreciated.

I would go ahead & treat him for IPs. Also, be sure to soak all his food in fish vitamins, like VitaChem.

Though he is only an inch, his growth can still be stunted based on living conditions. I don’t think a ten gallon is too small, but do you know what the LFS kept him in and fed him? He could also just be a slow grower, if he is eating fine.

Out of concern and due too the high protein diet you really should be doing more water changes along with wiping down the glass.
Consider prazipro to see if maybe tape worm is the cause . Good luck .

I agree--definitely up those WC to a minimum of 50% weekly. What are your plans to upgrade?

I know it's been awhile. I am curious what happened. My experience with our fahaka is that he seems to grow big and fat before he grows long.
What is yours? I hope your fish is well!
