Hi! I have looked in the library and noticed that for DPs they are preferable to lower pH but a higher pH is ok as long as it stays steady. I have noticed since I set up my tank that my pH seems to fluctuate anywhere from 7.6 to 8.2. I do have African Cichlid Mix Substrate (I didn't even think about the pH when I bought it) so that is probably playing a part in the fluctuation. My questions are:
1) Will this be too much for my DP (getting this weekend)?
2)How can I keep it consistent?
3)Should I change my substrate?
Thank you!

Have you checked your tap water for these same fluctuations?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Re: PH Levels Fluctuate
is it 7.6 after a water change and 8.2 beforehand? If so your substrate choice is buffering the water to alkaline which makes sense for an African Cichlid substrate.

My tap water is 7.4 straight out of the tap and then 3 hours later it is 7.0. When I test the water in my tank it's usually 8.0 or above. I changed my substrate out and its still fluctuating. What is the best way to keep it steady?

What is the kH of your tank? I have a feeling that your pH swings are a result of both your substrate and a low kH. And aside from removing the substrate, which should prove more effective in a few days, some driftwood in the aquarium would release tannins that would counteract a pH rise.
