Resuced - Need some advice
So a few days ago we setup an extra tank we had here at the house. We stopped by LFS to see if there was anything we couldn't do without. lol bad Idea I know.
So we were getting ready to leave because nothing jumped out at us until we looked a lower tank. We first thought the fahaka was dead. He was floating at the top but then we noticed him flapping his fins.
The poor guy was in a tank with two cichlids that were beating up on him. Well we broke down and took a chance to see if we could nurse him back. We figured he had a better chance with us than in the tank he was in...
Cant tell if he has IP or ICK or what.. Secondly we have tried frozen krill, ghost shrimp, pellets and live earth worm.. No dice on food as of right now. We are going to try and grab some snails today because he is hunting thru the sand (blowing). Any suggestions on helping this little guy out? Total length 5"
Medications?
Home Remedies?

Awww... whatta face! I can see why you rescued him.
I don't see any ich on him. Just keep trying live foods--maybe get him a small female fiddler crab?

Aww...dang he is PITIFUL!
Definitely some melafix for the tail fin.
If he does not eat soon, catheter feed. Most of the time when they look that bad and don't eat they just die.
So, make a catheter...soak some blood worms in ip meds, and feed. Add vitamins if you can find them.

Re: Resuced - Need some advice
Those are both fine, the melafix should help with the fin damage, but I believe the pimafix is unnecessary unless he has finrot/some other bacterial infection. Just dose as directed and you should be good to go, good luck saving the little guy!
No human being, however great, or powerful, was ever so free as a fish.

Re: Resuced - Need some advice
Instead of using Melafix I would just do extra wc's and keep the water extra clean the fin damage will heal itself quickly. Also you need to treat for internal parasites with Jungle parasite tabs what most people here use or something similar once he starts eating, Its important to take care of that sooner rather than later.

I agree with all posts above, he may be skinny from being beaten up and not wanting to eat or it may be parasites so its worth treating just to be safe. Clean water and melafix will have that tail sorted in no time at all
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Re: Resuced - Need some advice
Well I found about 40 snails (ramshorn). Cant tell if he has eaten very many or they are just all hiding but he is very active last night. I expect over the next two days he will be everywhere in the tank. He actually fanned his tail out late last night and chased a few ghost shrimp around.
Tonight going to try some clam meat for him and see if we can get some small chunks down him. Water quality is top notch got that covered no issues. I have a water treatment system on the side of the house that rips everything out of the water. It comes out of the tap at 7.0 with 0's across the board. No nitrates nitrites nothing.
What about him having an IP whats the best way to handle that the jungle tabs?

I just take 1/4 cup of tank water, put food in (blood worms usually), then put in 1/4 of a tab in, let soak 20 minutes. You can also add garlic juice if needed.

Oh, with the melafix just follow the instructions on the bottle. It will not harm his stress coat at that doseage.
I agree that clean water is most important, but I can see a white edge on his fin...So I would add melafix to speed recovery.
I love melefix, I've seen it work in days.

I think his teeth look fine. Be sure to soak all his foods in a good vitamin. Zoe or Vita-Chem are good brands.
