What is this?
It's kind of fuzzy looking. And has a gray color.

Is it only on the wood?
Brackish water will do some nasty stuff to driftwood. Pull the wood out and give it a good smell.

There are many knowledgeable fish keepers on this forum willing to help and give great advice...The advice is free; What you choose to do with it gives it value.

Re: What is this?
Oh you know what I did put it in the oven! Your comment reminded me. A guy at a lfs told me to bake it at 250º for 30 minutes. I soaked it in my tub for a couple days which really help the tannis? a lot. Then I put it in the oven.

My guess is that its harmless, test your water periodically and see if its okay. Maybe just bacteria and salt causing a chemical reaction on the wood. Rub it off and see if it comes back

Re: What is this?
I have a piece of Mopani Wood that has a quarter sized patch of that fuzz growing on a rough edge and its been that way for 6 months. It has not harmed my DP's.
And JRC3 is right about wood in salty water. It will break down faster and mess up the water chemistry over time. Especially if it is in anything over SG 1.005.
