Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
Ammonia, 0

The baby ceylon I brought home last night was looking fine, this morning it had a slight lumpy belly, possibly parasites? What is used to treat this, and can treatment be used in the same tank if Duma my GSP is not showing symptoms?

Has he had food? Because as the food gets digested and moved along the intestinal track you can also see some lumps. For my GSP this is mostly the case during feeding and right before a big poop.jenrkit84 wrote:Ammonia, 0

Re: Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
It ate a snail lastnight, and the girl at the LFS told me she had fed them about an hour prior to me picking it up. I know parasites are common in puffers, and it did poop lastnight as well.

what did the poop look like? Typically IPs are identified by white stringy feces or a defecation that resembles a "string of pearls".

It was normal, this little much is much smaller and not as "fat" as my GSP, perhapse the digestion process is more easily seen?J-P wrote:what did the poop look like? Typically IPs are identified by white stringy feces or a defecation that resembles a "string of pearls".

Re: Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
If you want to treat for IPs that should be fine. It doesn't have an effect on your water chemistry or the biofilter. Some people treat all their new fish for IPs regardless of whether they show signs or not.

^^^I do that, unless the fish comes from a trusted private breeder. If it came out of a store, especially one with central filtration, I ALWAYS treat.
The lumps are probably food. That's normal enough.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Re: Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
Puffers are not built like other fish. Among their modification for puffing up is the lack of ribs. Most fish have strong and prominent ribs which protect their internal organs and provide attachment for the muscles they use for swimming. Puffers have neither those ribs nor those swimming muscles, so their guts and the food ingested earlier are easily visible. That definitely takes some getting used to. But for these fish it is normal. From most meals, the food stays together in the stomach and passes into the gut as a single lump (very large meals may break up into several lumps in the lower guts) which passes out as a mucus-enclosed pouch. Most fish excrete threads of fecal matter, puffers do not. They excrete discrete lumps of fecal matter.

Re: Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
I knew about the lack of ribs as well as the being able to see if the puffer is full or not, I just noticed 2 small lumps on the ceylons belly this morning towards the end that I did not notice lastnight.RTR wrote:Puffers are not built like other fish. Re: Lumpy Stomach - Parasites?
It is not easy to see food still in the stomach itself, as that just pushes the intestine back a bit. At that stage it is just the "lightly rounded belly" that we suggest as adequate feeding. You can't usually see the discrete lumps until they are in the intestines.
