I just wanted to clear up that you don't put him directly put him in a cup of clove oil, I skimmed the euthanasia article last night and you mix the oil with water. the directions are unfortunately vague with measurements though.

Ahhh, i tried that days ago and go no response. I've had them for probably 4 months now and he was doing okay until last week when he went off of his bloodworms, my snail breeder also had some issues and i ran out of snails. It was like a combination of things that has led to this. My other DP is huge, fat and in great shape.

If i decide to get a few more to fill out the tank i'll make sure i select them this time round.

ilovelola, Thanks. I looked over the article on euthanasia last night and couldn't bring myself to do it. I hate vague, vague makes me feel like i'll do it wrong and he'll suffer even more. I have to go out for the afternoon so maybe he'll be gone by the time i get back. (isn't that an awful thing to think? it's what i thought last night though). he's not moving around as much as he was this morning, i guess he tired himself out. This will be the 3rd complete day with no food, how long can these little guys last when they don't eat at all? bearing in mind he was very skinny to begin with.

With many animals, there comes a point after being starved for some time they never eat. Some animals can be force-fed--not a tiny DP though. I think it is time to let him go. Take a cup of tank water & put a dropper full of clove oil & then the puffer. He'll go to sleep 1st & die very quickly. Then put the whole thing in a baggie & in the freezer.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I don't think its so awful. It kind of sounds awful, but it's not. No one wants to make the decision to euthanize their pet and then wonder if they should have waited longer, or if it was cruel. but I think that PP is right in that it is probably time to let him go. Don't feel badly about it--know that you did everything you could to help him.

I'm sure this is obvious, so forgive me, but add a few drops of clove oil to some tank water, and add him to that water. Don't use it full strength, that will not be a peaceful passing.

You can also place him in ice water if you want to avoid the clove oil.
You can try to force feed him, at this point it could be worth trying.

Well it's done. I used the clove oil (iput some latex gloves on before handling it) the put the water in the freezer. I feel bad but it's for the best. He was suffering and now he's not.

Thanks to everyone for the advice ( & snails).

Button is spazzing looking for his buddy, I'm going to move him to my female beggar 5 g planted tank and put her in the 20g and get her some friends.
