GSP rescue

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I have beaphar multi wormer for dogs (couldn't get ahold of pig dewormer so I went with this as it's apparently as useful).
There's two types of tablets in the packet: one, containing Dichlorophen, is used to kill tapeworms. The other, containing piperazine citrate is for killing roundworms (ascarids)
I'm going to grind them up and add them to the next water change I do, but how much should I add and which one would be better?
Here's a link with a better look at the tablets:

I don't think you want to add it to the water column, I believe you want to soak the food in it. They need to get the medication inside of them.

Ugh, ok guys. He's been doing ok, but now he's showing signs of ich so I'm going to get some medication asap. What can I do in the meantime? (Done a few water changes!)

Whats your current sg? If your still at f/w you may be able to up the sg to combat this ich? Keep doing plenty of waterchanges and vacuum gravel well. You may be able to rid your puff of this without meds
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Herbal ich attack is the only one I know of that is puffer safe.
Don't raise the temp, and make sure you oxygenate the water more than normal.

I agree with seven.... But if they are f/w at mo wouldnt raising sg kill off f/w ich? salt and heat kills f/w ich so surely the addition of brackish conditions would destroy the ich with no temperature raising anyway? I could be wrong but logic says raising sg would kill the ich?

If he's in freshwater, then yes, raise the SG, but not the temp. Heat will help kill the ich, but it also has a high fish fatality rate. Just raising the SG is safer. The raised temp makes it difficult to impossible for them to get enough oxygen.

Sorry didnt explain properly. Was not suggesting raising heat. But said heat/salt worked with f/w fish. I suggested raising sg to kill this ich. That would work tho right? I do believe you just confirmed that tho sevenyear. Just wanna check what i said was correct as it was just a logical guess. As i dont want to give incorrect advice

Yeah, that's correct...but too many fish don't survive the higher temp, and it's not essential so I wouldn't chance it.

I added more salt (a teaspoon) into the water when I changed it earlier. I'll add more every time I change the water, gradually building it up to the right level.

Do you have as hydrometer or a refractometer? You can't guess with salt, as the levels will vary through water changes and such. This is really an essential part of making your brackish water.
