Bio Filter?

I am purchasing a 40 gal corner aquarium for my gsp and will be setting it up full marine. The protein skimmer I have been leaning towards id the Coral life 65. I recently purchased a H.o.t. Magnum pro (for a great deal) for the 40 gallon and then realized through reading various posts and articles that I may not need a bio filter in full marine. All I need is the right amount of live rick and a adequate protein skimmer and power head. From what I have read all the bio filtration will be done by the live rock. I am Brand New to the Saltwater world and I know there is probably a million other posts about the same topic because I have read many of them. Just top make sure though Do I need a filter at all? Should I get rid of the magnum and put that money towards a better PS? I appreciate any and all advice.

You do not need a biofilter, no. You need however need lots of liverock as you said 1.5-2 pounds per gallon. Also don't get the coral life skimmer, I've heard terrible things. If you need a HOB skimmer get a BakPak.

Were you planning to do a sump at all? There are lots of advantages if you're planning on a sump. Also corner tanks take away a lot of the swimming room a puffer needs.

I had the CSS 125 on my 55g. It worked pretty good--when it wasn't overflowing onto the floor... Get the Backpac. You don't need the canister filter for SW. You'll need the $$$ for LR, 1.5-2lbs/g. Look on Craigslist & Reef Central, to see if you have a local reef club near you with someone selling it cheap, from their established tank.

Thank you so much for the advise. Now I just need to come up with the for the live rock. Is a 40 corner to small for a full grown Gsp? It will probably be just him in there.

I somewhat disagree about the swimming space for a GSP. If you have good current flow along the long room face of the basically triangular or pie-wedge-shaped tank, you may just have better swimming distance than most standard rectangular tanks. I have seen some very nice corner puffer tanks. Unfortunately my house has a deficit of corners where such could be used, or I would likely have a few of them myself. Quite a few owners of such tanks say they are a PITA to set up, but agree that once done, they can work well.

I would second the suggestion of adding a sump. I am a sump nut I admit. It boosts water volume and allow hiding of some of the awkward utilities.
