brown algae problem

my tank is getting alot of brown algae and the algae eaters dont live for more than a few days when i put em in there...what can i do to get rid of it the salinity is around 1.006

it will correct itself if this is a new tank set up

its not new i have had my puffer in it for about 3 months

It is likely diatom algae. It is due to soluble silicates in the water. Does your water utility offer analyses of the water they supply? You could call and ask if they test for silicates in the supply. If your silicate levels are moderate to high, you can expect the problem to continue.

Manual removal is the easiest treatment. Using no more light than is needed is good for reduction of algae in general, but diatoms are not as demanding on light as are most green algae, so can grow with relatively low light.
