Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

F8 beak trimming

Hi all,

Once again, I seek your puffer wisdom!

We've just moved house very successfully with our little F8 - the slight change in water actually seems to have really suited him, and if anything, he's even brighter and zippier than he was before! I was so worried about stressing him during the move, but he was tucking into a cockle within about ten minutes of being released into his new home, like nothing ever happened :D

But there's a small problem... We've had him for a year and a half now, and despite regular feeding of crunchy food, he's getting a bit beaky. He's still feeding fine, but I've noticed that he's started to get bits of food starting to get stuck around his mouth, and his little beak is visible from the front now (will try to get a pic tonight.)

So, it seems like a trimming is in order, but I'm in the UK, and as far as I know, I can't get Tranquil / Finquil / MS222 over here? I've read the Dentistry article in the library, I'm just wary of using Clove Oil, and so worried I'll mess up. What do other UK-based puffer parents suggest? Any advice / reassurance for beak trimming would be gratefully received!

Somebody in the UK has a way of getting MS222, hopefully then see this post ans reply. I think they have it shipped in from DFS without much issue,.,,,,
"Darwin swings...annnnnnd a miss. Boy Jim, Chuck's suffered at the plate tonight. He's 0 for 3 and I'm not sure he's recovered from that shoulder pull a few weeks ago. I'll bet the front office is re-thinking that contract."

one of my F8's gets beaky as well. I don't sedate him though, I just net him and clip him (underwater).

That might be me! I work at a vets & can easily get one of the vets to OK a prescription for you - then I would be happy to post it on. The alternative is that I send you a little of the opened pack that I used last year. PM me if you're interested.

I bought Bommy a langoustine on Saturday, he's had a lovely time crunching the legs up - making sure he's in tip top condition before we trim!

hi, i have also a f8 that needs his/hers tooth cutting. its on the top of the mouth but out of the 2 teeth they hav on top only 1 is getting a bit big. snalls go in every other day 2/3 of um. I read that u can get something from the vets what is it called and am i right in using nail clippers.

But if that fails is it possiable to cut its tooth by some how netting him/her in the water?? need to do something soon before its too late. not sure if its on here but i live in the uk. any help would be great

The tranq drug is MS-222. You can try to hold them underwater in a net but if they puff or squirm, it is easy to cut their lip off. In an emergency, if the puffer is otherwise healthy, you can try clove oil but it does stop their breathing, which if used over & over, it can cause brain damage or possibly kill a weak fish.
