stung by lionfish?

Post by lisafoster »

125 reef 20 months old
ammonia 0
nitrates 5
ph 8.3
salinity 1.025
weekly 30 gallon water changes
I added a porcupine puffer 10 days ago. on the first day he kept getting really close to my lion fish. I believe he stung him. he was eating great scallops shrimp clams. Three days after I had him I noticed a grey patch around his eye It has now spread to 1/2 of his body , yesterday he lost the blue sheen in one of his eyes today it is cloudy. I also noticed his mouth remains open. he has stopped eating he is also more active today than ever. I have removed him for the tank into a qt. he appears to be breathing heavy and the fin on his grey side is not moving it is clamped against his side. he is swimming all over. I have never had to medicate a fish what would be a good med to get him.
tank mates
niger trigger 3 inches
yellow tang 4 inches
scribbled rabbit fish 4 inches
volitan lionfish 5 inches
leopard wrasse 3 inches
everyone else is fine I have not noticed anyone picking on him
125 gallon mixed reef
40 gallon breeder reef
15 gallon long angler fish tank

Welcome to The Puffer Forum. It is possible that your puffer might have vibrio, a gram negative bacteria, certainly does sound like it. Do a search on the forum here for that, there are some picture and treatment options. I am not that well educated on this disease but do understand that pocs are the only puffers that usually contact it. It is very contagious to both you and the other fish in the tank and usually fatal. . Hopefully I am wrong and it is did get stung by the lion. I hope you do understand that a porcupine puffer alone needs 125 gallon so your tank might be a little over stocked.

Did you QT this puffer at all? Go ahead & answer this Q in your Hospital thread. It will be confusing to double post about this.
