I have a GSP. I inherited it from a friend that had it in freshwater. I thought i was was smart because I knew that I was going to have to slowly convert it to brackish water. I went to my lfs and got me some freshwater aquarium salt and tried to raise the salinity by .002. I put in the dissolved salt little by little checking the salinity after every little bit until I ended up putting about 1.5 cups of the salt into my fully cycled 20 gallon tank without it even raising the salinity. I decided to stop adding more and look a little further into things just to discover that I need marine salt rather than freshwater salt. I have the marine salt but I am wondering if it will be bad to add the instant ocean in with the freshwater salt. Should I just start converting to brackish conditions normally (like the threads on here have explained) or would you all try something different? Is the salt that I did add way too much even though it didn't really raise the salinity? Will it hurt my bacteria or my fish? I did it 2 days ago and there is still no ammonia or nitrite and the fish are still looking and acting healthy. Thanks for your help in advance!
Excuse the fry puffer problem but help please! :)

So, I have tried to think of a way to say this to make myself seem less dumb but there really isn't any way to do it so here we go

A very large water change should take care of the aquarium salt problem. Good luck with the new guy!
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

So my plan is to do 40% water change now, wait two days, do another water change, wait 2 more days and do a water change starting to add the marine salt. Sound good????? And from my water tests today i haven't killed off my bacteria yet. We'll see what happens

Re: Excuse the fry puffer problem but help please! :)
haha sorry about that! My community fish are all together in my 30 gallon tank and then my puffers in a separate 20 gallon. So yeah I have spent the last week in books and all over the internet studying up on how to care for my little guys. I am glad to have them and i am really excited. I know that I will need a bigger tank within a few months, I'll be moving into a new apartment in about 4 months so I figure it will be the perfect time to switch to a bigger tank for them.

Ignore the books..just come here..
Since you are doing a big move..you can set up a snail tank for their teeth as well
That pictus catfish would enjoy a bigger tank as well

You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
