First skimmer - need advice

Post by chubber »

Hello All....

I’m planning on shifting my GSP to a new 190 litre aquarium and then slowly converting to Marine. This is a while away, but I thought I’d start researching now as it is my first journey into the world of marine. I have lots of questions, but my firsts is about skimmers.

I’m wondering what skimmer to use. I’m not planning to use a sump so I guess I need a hang on skimmer. Here is the short list that I have come up with:

Aqua C Remora
Octopus BH-300s
Deltec MC300

Has anybody got any experience of these or any others they would recommend?

Also some of the posts that I have read on other sites indicate that HOB skimmers are prone to overflowing. I’m really concerned about this. Can anyone advise on the likelihood of this happening and the circumstances that would cause a skimmer to overflow.

Cheers

ACR is similar to the Backpac skimmers I have on my 15g & 40g & I am pleased with it's preformance.

Actually, now that you ask... I have one near a window & hadn't noticed it was filling with algae & the flow was extremely slow. If i han't checked it when I did (right before I was going away for the weekend), it definetly would have overflowed--it was right at the top. But I can't see how they'd overflow in any other way.
