Ghost Shrimp with DP

Post by mrgreen »

My tank has been up for a month now and today I added some ghost shrimp. I have little snails cleaning and a couple ottos. All is happy- even getting some algea on the texas holy rock. The ghost shrimp vary in size but none are small enough that he could just eat. Take bites out of - of course. And bonus- I saw one of the shrimp eating a dead brine shrimp! Woot! (Yes I did a w/c beford putting in the shrimp but there's always left over junk that gets stirred up.)

My Ghost Shrimp/River Shrinp (I'm sure their the same thing) are exellent scavengers, they'll pounce on the food before my DP's normally. They love bloodworms, flake, mussle and will even eat each others dead bodies if one dies!

I've also got some crabs and corys in there so the tank is cleaned up constantly :D

I've had some in my main tank for weeks and they don't seem to mind that it's warm water (they're suppose to live in Brackish cold water, at least the river shrimp in the UK are), I just add Aquarium salt to the tank and it keeps them alive

Here is a picture of one of them eating a brine shrimp! They catch them quickly and hold them and munch them. Its too cute. (Though not quite as cute as spider crabs picking at algea I have to admit!)

Hmm... Will these guys need aquarium salt? There is no salt in the tank right now. Its 2 ottos, one dp, some tiny snails and blood worms- oh and the brine shrimp. Four of the ghost shrimp- there were 5, but one was blue and not moving.

In the UK they're kept in Brackish

I've looked at your pix and they look identical to my river shrimp, if they're living ok as they are then cool leave them as they are (they might be different to the UK River Shrimp)

Did the LFS say if they were FW?

I know I find it hard to tell ghost shrimp (salt) between grass shrimp (fresh) apart. What were they keeping them in at the store?
