Tetraodon species generally have no external sex differences.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I've not been getting my notices from the board. I've also been tied up with one of my other critters.

I just refer to my little Congo as "she" and my big Congo as "he". There is no way to differentiate their sex.

I routinely refer to animals who are discreet about their gender as he. This comes from my mother who always said - on the same subject - "Well, it's dumb and not much use, so it's got to be male."

Not that I share her views, but I just picked up the habit.

I'm resurecting an older post here, but Hoover, what were the params of your Pustulatus tank? Size, substrate, age of Hector etc.?

I guess I'm just looking for experiences, tank sizes, any anecdotes people have. It's so hard to learn about something that hardly anyone knows about!

Hello lisalisa,
I had had the pustulatus for about two years he was about 6cm long when we got him and about 28cm long when he died.He lived in very good water conditions 40% changes weekly and was living in a 5 foot 400litre tank with coral gravel and was also living in freshwater.
I would say he was less tolerant of tankmates as he matured and if i could give any advice to anyone lucky enough to obtain one i would keep the puffer alone i think if i had done that mine would still be with me.
I would recommend getting one if its possible they have great personalities,quite active for a large puffer,a cross between a fahaka for temperament and mbu for activity and personality.
