Need to Euthanaise How much Clove Oil?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I wouldn't be doing it if i didn't have to, a crab got hold of him last night and he has a hole into his head, back and gill, he is now just floating about unable to use his fin and tail and getting repeatedly stuck on the filter. i have now turned the filter off but i can not just sit here and watch him suffer

Wow, sorry to hear this. Thanks, though, for the somewhat indirect warning about crabs and puffers together.

As unfortunate as it is, a couple of drops will do the deed. I have only had to do this one time and it was very hard. I am sorry for your loss. :(

so sorry for your loss. its very distressing when you find a fish in that state.
I once had a ram that got pop eye and all the other fish in the tank started to eat him while he was alive. He couldnt swim around properly and had huge chunks taken out of him and all of his fins had been chewed off. I actually euthanised him using the freezing water method. He died within about 5 seconds of holding him under, but i found it incredibly distressing for the 5 seconds that he was struggling for :(

I hope you find the right answer for your poor pufferr :(

Thank you all for your kind words, Puffin is no longer suffering. I must admit tho that it was the hardest thing i have done with any of my fish. i have fed home bred feeders to my other puffer before and it didn't bother meat all but this, brought tears to my eyes and puffin will be missed greatly, he lived in my tank right next to my bed so was the first and last thing i saw every day.
Thank you all again.

sorry for your loss... :( What kind of crab?

I use an entire dropperful & after about 1/2 hour, freeze the fish. I thought we were working on an article on this for the Library at one time.

It was a red claw crab, originally there were 4 but over time puffin had eaten them, i guess this time he was either asleep or just got too close.

Try getting only females. They have 2 small claws.
