angular belly after eating?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

angular belly after eating?

Post by Mareva »

Hello, me again with my DPs!
This time it's Borneo that gets a strange looking rather angular belly after eating. It's always on the same side, it looks strange, I don't know if I should worry or not? This started about a week ago. (Borneo is the one on the right, see the triangle bump?!)

It's really angular, but all he eats is bloodworm and he got it's first snail this week too. When he eats bloodworm, he often gets stucked with a piece of it out of it's mought and he doesn't seem able to get rid of it (he tries though1).
This other picture is not as clear but you see where on his belly that strange bump is (the second bump):

It seems to go away when he's not eating.
Bad or not?
Thanks!

Lumpy belly is a fairly common, food fills up the stomach and causes this effect. That one looks a bit of a glutton taking in quite a lot more than the other. Difficult to try and stop him taking as much especially with more than 1 puffer in the tank.

I just realised the picture is cut a little on the right. That angular bump doesn't appear on it's other side. The other side is round, that's why it worried me. The oher puffs get round bellies too, not triangle sides! Still nothing to worry?

When I feed my Abei mussel, sometimes one side lumps out and the other is flat, I wouldnt worry about it.

Thanks you guys! I feel better knowing it's normal. Since I'm new to puffers, I never know if these things are normal or not. Luckily, you guys are here! :D

I went to see the forum from work today and realised that the pictures are not cut on the right side there! I guess my screen at home is too small! lol Need to update!

lol I need a new monitor too!!

I often found that Clooney would swell to his left side after a meal, nothing to worry about but try to offer as much variation in the diet to prevent any constipation, reaing snails and gut loading them with good veg is a way to get some roughage into them ;)

Maybe we should do a group buy of computer screens!

I've started my snail breeding tank. Right now I have a ton of babies... will be giving them vegetables to add fibers to the puffers food! Thanks for the advise!
