Marine tank no sump?
So I will be setting up a marine tank. It's 5x2x2.5 ft. I can add many canisters without media obviously. So187 usg gross realistically about 110 usg
will be adding about 140kgs of live rock and 3 power heads rated at 1000 lph. Any tips or hints? Should I just replace the tank for for one with a sump. Inhabitants unknown as of now poss a gsp

Re: Marine tank no sump?
I keep a fully-stocked (with mixed corals) 50g tank with no sump. I do 50% WC every 3 weeks. I do have a very nice HOB simp/fuge/skimmer FS (no pump):

So it's easily possible? Even in a 5 footer, so excited. Plan is to run about 2000 GPS through the empty cannisters and run 3 x powerheads. Will fine tune so no dead spots, still no stocking plans lol

I don't have a sump on my 60 either and it is becoming a reef tank, slowly
I'm not worried about not having a sump in terms of water parameters really, thought I'm sure it'd help, but more so because I'd like that space for equipment like the heat and skimmer. I think I'd do a sump *when* I get a larger tank.
I look forward to hear about what you're stocking plans are.

Re: Marine tank no sump?
My guess, it's close to what I'm asking for it but it you want to investigate, I can give you the weight & dimensions. It really is a neat sump!

Re: Marine tank no sump?
The sump is a little under 5" wide (I'd think you could keep the tank 5" from the wall) & around 21 1/2 " long. Weighs about 15lbs.

Re: Marine tank no sump?
bertie, i seriously think you need a sump for your tank. your system is large, and you are limiting your options of the type of tank you want.
without a sump, you will have so many equipment hanging on your tank. my 46g no sump tank got lots of stuff hanging over the rim: ato, heater, 2 pumps, skimmer, lights. Once i upgrade, then there will be even more equipment.

I'll have to admit, most SPS do die in that tank.

Re: Marine tank no sump?
Ok so I need to rethink. I do have a tank with a sump but it is ugly, needs lots of work and I would need to get a stand. Was trying to keep more money for live rock. Corals would be nice but not in my immediate plans. A flame red angel is a defo, not sure what else though. I keep thinking gsp but that will limit my other choices and would put the angel out of the equation. Dunno really lol. Was gonna get it set and stable then go fish shopping.

Re: Marine tank no sump?
There were many tanks w/o sumps for many years. But they did tend to be junky and cluttered. The big benefit to a planned sump or sumps is organization with the display being just that.

Re: Marine tank no sump?
Heat will be provided by 2 eheim cannisters ( no media inserted but puss a couple chunks of live rock) so it will be the skimmer which will complicate things. This is one of my favourite tanks so do not wish to drill it. A hang on overflow may be an issue due to a high rim on the tank. I could pump water to a sump and then back but would fear a pump malfunction flooding my house. I guess I may have to either sort my crappy tank or buy another tank. I just wanted to keep it simple lol

Re: Marine tank no sump?
Angels (even dwarfs) are touch & go with corals. I will only buy one from a fellow reefer's tank that has been proven to be reef safe. I got a Potter's from a LFS that swore it was reef safe & it killed a clam & 3 open brains. NIMFT!
I have no heaters in my fish room. Between the lights & the de-humidifier in there, I have to use fans, even in the winter.
