A few questions from a newbe

Im thinking about getting rid of my convicts and getting a figure 8 puffer. 1. What fish do you use in the place of a pleco for a brackish tank.
2. How much salt do you put per gallon for them.
3. Is there anything different as far as water maintnence between fresh and brackish (besides the salt)

You cant really have any tank cleaners with a brackish fish. Puffers will eat all invertebrates, you have to do your own cleaning.

I suggest you check out the Library section of this forum -- some really informative and fascinating information therein. In particular, there's a great article about Figure 8's and their care that explains about water parameters, maintenance, and so forth![/b]

There are no brackish water plecos. It is generally advised to house Figure 8's in light brackish conditions (SG to about 1.005). You would need a hydrometer to measure the SG accurately.

Species only tanks work best, for a Figure 8 you need 10 gallons per fish at least.

As for tankmates, some success has been had with bumble bee gobies and knight gobies. But remember, puffers are killers by nature and may not tolerate tankmates.

The maintenance for a low end brackish tank is comparable to freshwater - the only difference being the marine salt (not aquarium salt) that must be added to the water.

Do lots of research before buying. You'll be better prepared.
