I'm not sure what the correct sg is but if its lower than that yes, keep it at what its used to and slowly reduce once a week. Osmosis kills.

Do you have a cycled tank at 1.012? If you don't and raise the SG that high right off the bat you'll kill the filter. Some others will have to chime as I've never acclimated a fish that much, but I think I'd just bring the fish down to whatever your cycled tank's SG is. You could also increase the tank's SG up an additional 1.002 to get cloer.
There are many knowledgeable fish keepers on this forum willing to help and give great advice...The advice is free; What you choose to do with it gives it value.

I've kept my fig8 for nearly 10/11 months at 1.004/1.005 (slight fluctuation between water changes). He's been active and happy pretty much the whole time. As for your question, your better off cycling at whatever SG you want (1.003-1.005) and then acclimating the puffer to the new water.

What SG are they at now, in the store? Not sure how you'd cycle at BW SG, unless you get media from a tank with that SG.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

1.003-1.005 for a f8. If the fish store keep them at a higher sg drip acclimate them to a more suitable level when you get them.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
